New Northampton boss Terry Fenwick, must of been wishing he was back in Trinidad when he saw John Murphy give Blackpool all three points with a last-gasp winner at Bloomfield Road.

Fenwick, in his first game of Cobblers boss, saw his side make a perfect start but fail to hang on for a point at the death.

The home side had made most of the early running and Scott Taylor had a hat-trick of early chances, but found keeper Nathan Abbey in fine form for Town.

On 33 minutes Fenwick, who had been coaching in the Caribbean, saw his side take the lead with a quick break that saw Marco Gabbiadini play in Derek Asamoah whose shot was saved by Phil Barnes.

The ball fall to Darryn Stamp unmarked on the goal-line, where he made no mistake.

Richard Walker hit the post for Blackpool but Northampton were growing in confidence and looked set to hold on to an unlikely three points until a moment of quality from former Manchester United youngster Rick Wellens earned him a penalty after a Paul Harsley foul.

Walker stepped up and converted the penalty.

Northampton brought on two more defenders and their gameplan of packing their own penalty area seemed to be paying off until four minutes into injury time, when a looping Danny Coid cross went between Abbey and one of his defenders allowing a grateful Murphy to bundle the ball home from four yards.

It was too late for the Cobblers to hit back, and Fenwick said: "It was very cruel, we always knew that this game was going to be hard fought.

"I was delighted by the way, by the effort the boys put in, we grabbed the goal and came out in the second half and weathered the storm but the two goals were shocking.

"We have to be more professional." Steve McMahon slammed the visitors tactics saying: "At one point they had eight across the back and then they took off two strikers and had nine or ten defenders."
