The Northampton area had fared relatively well all week and the Cobblers were confident of the game going ahead until an overnight temperature of -7 on Friday night froze the Sixfields pitch.
Sampson said: "There wasn't really any more we could have done about it. The pitch was worse than it was two weeks ago, it was spread all over the pitch rather than just in one area.
"We wanted to play because we could have gone up the table quite a bit if we'd got the three points.
"We knew the three teams above us had all had their games postponed on the Friday, so we would have at least gone above those sides if we'd won.
"It's disappointing but every game in the division was off so it's the same for everyone."
