Goals from Luke Guttridge and Adebayo Akinfenwa secured three points for the Cobblers and lifted them to within six points of seventh-placed Chesterfield.
But a cautious Sampson said: "When I came to the job my first priority was to get into the top half of the league.
"We're still only 13th so that's still my first task but when we get there we'll take another look. It's an old cliche but you've got to take one game at a time.
"I thought we dominated the first half and could easily have had two or three goals by half-time and certainly deserved more than one. We expected them to come out strongly and they did for a while but even then we controlled the second half and kept our performance with some really nice touches."
