Tuesday night's win at Hereford left the Cobblers two points short of the top seven after a fine run of form, and Sampson is hoping to sneak into the promotion reckoning.
He said: "Chesterfield and Rotherham are going well and Notts County have games in hand so it looks like everybody is scrapping for the final place at the minute.
"Shrewsbury are on the same amount of games as us and are six points ahead, so they are the ones we are looking to chase.
"We've still got to play them as well so they are our target.
"If we can have another 10 or 11-game run without being beaten then that will give us a good chance, but it is a big ask."
