Northampton manager Ian Sampson called for his side to carry the momentum from their 2-0 Carling Cup victory over Brighton into Saturday`s league clash against Accrington. Youngster Michael Jacobs grabbed the opening goal on his full debut, cutting inside before beating Michael Poke from 15 yards. Billy McKay then doubled the Cobblers` advantage with a diving header before Seagulls midfielder Matt Sparrow saw red late on
. Sampson now wants to see his charges continue in the same fashion at the weekend as they look to banish their 3-0 opening-day loss at Torquay. He said: "It was the response we were after following Saturday's defeat. The players responded in the right manner and it was a very good performance.
"Billy McKay worked his socks off and I'm pleased he got his reward with a goal. Michael Jacobs has got obvious talent. But that was his first full game and he's still learning his trade. He will attract attention but we've just got to try to keep his feet on the ground.
"We've got to look for some more consistency now and look to take this performance into Saturday's league game with Accrington."
