The Cobblers were 20th on Christmas day but after a fifth straight win Sampson admitted that he has not given up hope of automatic promotion just yet.
He said: "We've got our sights set on the teams above us but the games are running out for us.
"There are nine games to go and the confidence is high at the moment and this was a comfortable victory for us.
"The first 20 minutes was the best football we've played at the start of any game and we could have been 3-0 up at half time but for their keeper and our finishing.
"The second goal made it comfortable for us, it was good to keep another clean sheet although we were a bit sloppy at times."
