The Cobblers have lost three and drawn two of their five matches since the former Bristol City boss took charge at the beginning of March.
"The manager wants us playing at a higher tempo, we're getting shots off and running off the ball," Johnson, 22, told BBC Radio Northampton.
"There's more communication off the pitch, and getting behind each other.
The former Middlesbrough trainee headed Northampton's opening goal from Abdul Osman's free-kick in Friday's 2-2 draw with Torquay.
"We've done a lot of work on set pieces - there's about 10 of them. We can have a lot of joy from them," he added.
The five-match winless run under new boss Gary Johnson means the Cobblers are without a win in 12 games, a run stretching back to the end of January.
"We'll be doing everything we can to get that win," said John Johnson.
"The performances have improved. That win will come soon and we'll definitely kick on."
Meanwhile, Northampton Town have appointed Peter Johnson, brother of boss Gary, as chief scout at Sixfields.
Peter was previously at Bristol City and joined Gary at Peterborough United in June 2010.
