Northampton Town looked to avoid a third straight league defeat on Tuesday night when they entertained Oxford United at Sixfields with their visitors keen to improve on a dismal away record in the season to date.
U's boss Michael Appleton had said beforehand: "We've spoken over the last couple of weeks about things we might have to do at times to almost entice them on to us."
"It is something we might have to introduce when we go away in terms of 'come on then, break us down', then when we counter, we do it quickly."
Oxford’s gameplan went out of the window in just the 4th minute as Enda Stevens put Northampton in front but it didn’t faze Appleton’s side and a quickfire double from Danny Hylton midway through the first half, the second goal coming from the penalty spot, sent them in at the break with the advantage.
Alfie Potter stretched the lead just after half-time and with no further goals it was Oxford’s travelling fans among a crowd of 4,577 who went home happy.
