That has been the indication of press reports on Tuesday and Wednesday as the D-Day of the club's winding up order looms ever closer.
The main news on Wednesday is of Northampton Borough Council lodging a petition asking for the club to be put into administration which they say will allow more time for takeover talks to take place.
Quoted on the BBC, council leader Mary Markham said: "The council, when it met on 2 November, was urged to take steps to oppose the petition for liquidation from HMRC, and it unanimously committed to do all it can to support the Cobblers and their followers.
"This course of action would prevent the club being put into liquidation on Monday and would give us time to continue working with other interested parties, including the Supporters' Trust, to put together a rescue plan for the Football Club."
On the field, manager Chris Wilder and his players continue to defy the gloom and Wilder himself has moved to quash reports of his exit after being linked with the currently-vacant role at Cambridge United.
