Still only 40-years-old, the former Watford, Colchester United and Coventry City manager has had plenty of experience already of the ups and downs associated with his profession.
Touted as the next big thing after guiding the Hornets into the Premier League, his last spell at Coventry lasted less than a season before he was sacked in March this year.
Former Swindon Town manager Andy King will be Boothroyd's assistant.
