Permission was given by Northampton Town chairman Kelvin Thomas on Monday for the Addicks to open negotiations with Wilder and his assistant Alan Knill.
But a statement on the official CAFC website says 'the club will now continue its search for a candidate to take the club forward'.
Is that the end of the interest in the man who, against the odds, took the Cobblers to the League Two title this season?
Not according to the South London Press newspaper which suggests that the developments of the past few days have alerted Sheffield United to Wilder's possible availability.
Nigel Adkins is the man currently in charge of the Blades, a club close to Wilder's heart after two playing spells there.
