League Two's bottom club were well beaten at Crewe and will now look to bounce back against the Cobblers.
"No disrespect, but that’s why players are playing at this level," said Staunton, quoted in the Northern Echo, who has made a number of changes to his squad during January.
"They haven’t got that consistency, we’re trying to get it.
"We’re playing catch-up on a number of fronts, one of which is fitness. If you’re not fit you can’t play three games in a week.
"I’m expecting after these first four games – before we have a midweek with no game – to be up to speed."
