Manager's comments after Cobblers lose at Vale

"I thought we dominated the game but did not convert our chances, especially in the first half," he said.

"We said at half time that we must not get caught by a sucker punch but they scored with a freak of a goal when Jason Crowe's clearance hit their player and fell perfectly for their lad to score. That seemed to knock us sideways for 10 minutes and that was disappointing. Their keeper made a couple of fantastic saves from Kenny Deuchar and again it was a story of us creating chances but not converting them.

"Again I could not fault the effort or the commitment but the disappointing thing is we are not punishing teams when we are on top in games. I can't recall Mark Bunn having that much to do although their keeper made two or three very good stops. We have to make it pay when we are on top."

"Our recent form had not been that bad but we have had some very tough away games and not had the rub of the green.

"The players were really down after losing at Orient on Saturday but this result will pick them up and ease the pressure.

"We've created a lot of chances and I could be greedy and say we should have won by more goals. But the main objective was to get three points and I'm delighted.

"We've got a few players who are coming back from injury and they were puffing towards the end, but all of them have stood up to be counted."
