The Cobblers can start planning for next season after finally securing their place in the Football League with a 2-0 win over Stevenage at the weekend but Johnson wants a new playing surface at Sixfields to encourage his passing game.
He said: "We've got to sort that pitch out and that will probably be our biggest signing of the summer in a way.
"You can see how many times, when you try to play football, that ball pops up in the air, goalkeepers kick it out of play and defenders are worried about it.
"We've got to take the top layer off that pitch and start afresh and that's probably going to be the chairman's biggest cost this summer."
