Northampton Town nearly sent their fans home happy from Sixfields on Saturday afternoon by fighting back to earn a draw against Wycombe Wanderers in their final League Two match of the season but were denied by a 97th minute goal for the visitors.
The Chairboys, still in the hunt for automatic promotion at the beginning of the game, scored twice in three minutes to take a commanding lead into the half-time break.
But if the Cobblers' players had their minds on their summer holidays it did not show as they dominated the second 45 minutes, an own goal halving the deficit before Ryan Cresswell levelled the scores late on.
That looked to be that but Alfie Mawson scored a dramatic winner which was not enough for them to go up automatically.
5,723 watched the action with Wycombe now going into the play-offs and Northampton ending a positive campaign with a top-half finish despite Saturday's late defeat.
