Paul Buckle's young Torquay side sent out an early-season warning that they mean business as three goals in six minutes earned them a 3-0 win against Northampton.
Left-back Kevin Nicholson got the ball rolling with a thumping left-foot drive to beat Town goalkeeper Oscar Jannson in the 44th minute. The second half was barely a minute old when left winger Danny Stevens teed up Chris Zebroski to double Torquay's tally. Jannson found Zebroski's first shot - from just inside the box - too hot to hold, and the Gulls forward was first to the loose ball to convert.
A brilliant passing move then resulted in Lee Mansell releasing striker Elliot Benyon to make it 3-0 with a shot on the run in the 50th minute. Town substitute Michael Jacobs crashed a 25-yard free-kick off the crossbar after 65 minutes.
Man-of-the-match Nicholson countered by bouncing a free-kick from similar distance off the woodwork with 10 minutes remaining.
