Gary Johnson's side had shown their mettle with a comeback from 3-1 down and were within seconds of sharing the spoils when the home team were awarded a penalty.
"It was a type of game I don’t really want to be involved in again, especially at home, but ultimately it comes down to winning games of football," said Hessenthaler.
"I’ve been involved in games where it goes the other way. We got our get out of jail free card, that’s our one for the season perhaps.
"It was a crazy game, too stretched."
