The 23-year-old midfielder has scored 11 goals for the Cobblers this season.
Gilligan told BBC Radio Northampton: "I'm in the best form since I came from Watford. You play 30 or 40 games and you become more consistent.
"It's 100% down to the coaches, it's brilliant to work with them. And playing off Adebayo Akinfenwa, we're fortunate to have a player like him."
He added: "He's probably the best target man in the league and I don't know many better in League One."
Northampton are just inside the League Two play-off positions in seventh place, six points behind Bournemouth in the automatic promotion spots.
"Our aim is to get as many wins as we can from last nine games. We've got a tough run in, playing some of the top five or six teams," said Gilligan.
"But we're looking up, instead of down, which is always positive."
