The 31-year-old is set to be one of League Two's wanted men over the summer after his recent release by Crewe Alexandra.
Believing himself to be in a strong position to find a new club, central defender Artell denied to the Chronicle & Echo however that he had been contacted by Aidy Boothroyd over a possible move.
Artell had been hoping to sign a new deal at Gresty Road after skippering Crewe to promotion but wished his former club all the best after discovering he was to be freed.
"I'm not embarrassed to admit that I didn't want to go, but it's the way Crewe work," he said, quoted in The Sentinel.
"They always want to bring younger players into the squad.
"It's ultimately proved to my detriment, but it's a fantastic, refreshing way to run a ship.
"All clubs in the lower leagues should look to Crewe as a sustainable way of producing and developing top quality young players."
