Dudfield has been a free agent since the end of June having turned down a one year contract with League One newcomers Southend United. He originally joined the Cobblers in June 2003, scoring six goals in 24 league and Cup appearances. He joined Southend originally on loan and made the move permanent at the beginning of last season, scoring 12 goals in 59 appearances.
A goal last Saturday for the Cobblers against Cambridge United was enough incentive for Colin Calderwood to offer him the open ended contract for both parties. With Scott McGleish on the injury list, Dudfield is likely to be in the starting line-up for the opening fixture away at Lincoln tomorrow.
