There was a clause in his contract that triggered a one year deal from Town but he has gone looking for a longer deal.
"David's last contract had a clause in it that said if he played 23 games last season he would be automatically be entitled to a new one year deal and so we made an offer to David that was in accordance with that clause," said Cobblers boss Stuart Gray.
But that wasn't enough for Hunt who said
"I wanted a bit of security, as much as knowing that I was wanted at the club.
"The contract length was obviously a reason, and I thought that not being in the team as much this year, I've been in and out quite regularly and I had a rough idea that I wouldn't be starting straight away next season.
"That gave me the inclination that maybe it is time to move and find regular football.
"I'd had regular football the year before with Colin Calderwood, it seemed like it was a consistent season and a good season.
"This season has been up and down, being injured at the start of the season, it's been up and down and I've been in and out the side.
"I haven't really played more than six games in a row this season, so I think it's time now to get my head down and just get on with my football.
"When the first contract was offered we asked about getting more years and as soon as we were told no, I didn't really feel like they were bothered about me going. It was more me feeling wanted that made me leave."
