John Johnson struck a brilliant 88th-minute winner for the Cobblers after Josh O'Keefe had cancelled out Billy McKay`s opener with a 30-yard piledriver of his own and victory propelled the Cobblers up to 14th in the table.
Sampson said: "It was a great goal to win the game and thankfully it gave us all three points. I think we deserved it overall but the players had to respond well after their late equaliser.
"It was a decent team performance and we looked very solid at the back, Ben Tozer and Dean Beckwith were outstanding.
"You won't see two better goals in League Two all season and it was important we got a good response after their equaliser.
"That's three wins out of four for us and we're heading in the right direction, but this division is very tight and anyone can beat anyone on their day. I'm not looking too far ahead and the important thing now is that we keep our strong home form going for the rest of the season."
