Northampton Town's excellent recent form in the League Cup continued on Tuesday night as they knocked out last season's beaten finalists Cardiff City in the first round of the 2012/13 competition.
Two of Aidy Boothroyd's new summer signings scored the goals as the Cobblers recovered from the loss of an early penalty and subsequent goal for Icelandic striker Heidar Helguson, netted past young goalkeeper Dean Snedker who started with Lee Nicholls not allowed to play by parent club Wigan Athletic.
Dave Artell, signed on Monday, made an immediate impact by scoring the equaliser before Alex Nicholls got the all important winning goal.
With the newly named Capital One Cup providing the competitive start to the new campaign Boothroyd will be looking for the surprise result of the round to act as a springboard for his side to improve on their dismal league showings of the past couple of years and said as much after the final whistle.
"Sometimes players get carried away with a cup win like this and then don't focus on the league. I don't want to be a team that has a good cup run and knocks a big team out of the cup but finishes near the bottom of the table."
