The Shakers won 2-1 at Oxford last weekend to earn themselves a first three points of the season and set themselves up for a return to Gigg Lane to face Northampton this Saturday.
Knill made a number of changes to his squad in the summer after a disappointing end to last season and said: "This is a work in progress.
"We've only been together eight weeks now so it is work in progress and I am quite sure that we can get better.
"We've done very well but obviously we want them to be a little bit better."
