The Brewers are looking for a second successive promotion and could be playing Championship football next season.
Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder would doubtless counsel against talk of his side going up but the Cobblers have an 18-point cushion over the team in 4th place in League Two and, as importantly, are in excellent form at the right stage of the season having made it ten wins in succession at York City on Tuesday evening.
Looking ahead, Burton have shown that the gap between the divisions can be bridged by a club who have stability and a squad of players who have grown used to winning football matches.
They were clearly the best side in League Two last season and have shown no signs of stopping in the current campaign despite the loss of manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink to Queens Park Rangers with Nigel Clough returning to his former club in succession.
Similar in size, Northampton would appear to have at least as much scope to progress as the Staffordshire club and stability, provided by Chris Wilder during the turbulent events earlier this season, looks to have returned off the field.
The latest confirmation of that came on Thursday when chairman Kelvin Thomas confirmed to the official club website that work had re-started on the East Stand at Sixfields and that it could be partially open in time for the final home matches of the season and what will hopefully be a promotion party.
